Periodic inspections

Periodic inspection is a regularly scheduled inspection of a vehicle, during which the vehicle’s condition and the information recorded in the register are checked.

In addition to the condition, the periodic inspection verifies that the vehicle is safe in traffic and does not cause excessive environmental harm. Furthermore, the periodic inspection monitors the payment of taxes and fees applicable to the vehicle.

Repair recommendations issued during the inspection are saved in the vehicle information system and printed on the certificate. The repair recommendations are removed from the certificate at the next periodic inspection if the defects have been corrected.

The inspection covers the following items:

• Axles, wheels, suspension
• Braking system
• Vehicle identification data (e.g., serial number, registration information)
• Electrical equipment, lights
• Chassis, body
• Steering and control devices
• Visibility (e.g., windshield, cleaning devices, mirrors)
• Environmental impact of the vehicle (e.g., noise, fluid leaks)
• OBD measurement (petrol-powered vehicles registered on or after January 1, 2001, and diesel-powered vehicles registered on or after September 1, 2016)
• Exhaust gas measurement (petrol-powered vehicles registered after 1978 and over 10 years old)
• Smoke opacity measurement (diesel-powered vehicles registered between January 1, 1980, and August 31, 2016)
• Additional inspections for special vehicles (e.g., fire truck equipment)
