Statutory Measurements
Emissions and exhaust gas testing is available at all our locations.
Vehicle exhaust gases contain gaseous and solid compounds that are harmful to the environment and human health. Carbon dioxide produced as a combustion product accelerates changes in the Earth’s atmosphere.
Every vehicle user can contribute to reducing exhaust emissions and their harmful effects by paying attention to vehicle use, driving style, and maintenance. Structural requirements imposed on new vehicles have reduced emission levels.
Emissions testing or smoke opacity testing conducted during inspection provides valuable information about the engine’s condition and helps drivers reduce environmental impact. Reduced emissions also mean lower fuel consumption.
For gasoline-powered vehicles, carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon compounds (HC) are measured. For diesel-powered vehicles, smoke opacity value (k) is measured.
OBD testing examines the vehicle’s operation based on data recorded by its onboard computer.
For gasoline-powered passenger cars and vans registered on or after January 1, 2001, OBD testing has been mandatory as part of inspection since January 1, 2004.
OBD testing is also performed on diesel-powered vehicles registered after September 1, 2016.
The test identifies fault conditions during vehicle operation. OBD (On-Board Diagnostics), the vehicle’s internal monitoring system, monitors the engine control unit’s commands and their responses.
What type of emissions testing?
| Vehicle | Emissions Testing |
| Gasoline-powered vehicle, registered 1978 – | Exhaust emissions testing is performed during periodic inspection for gasoline-powered vehicles registered in 1978 or later. For low-emission gasoline-powered vehicles, exhaust emissions are measured both at idle and at elevated engine speed. The lambda value, or air-fuel ratio, is also measured. |
| Gasoline-powered vehicle, registered 2001 – | For gasoline-powered passenger cars registered in 2001 or later, OBD testing is performed in addition to exhaust emissions testing. The OBD system (OBD = On-Board Diagnostics), or internal monitoring system, became mandatory for gasoline-powered vehicles on January 1, 2001. OBD system testing replaces idle speed measurement for vehicles registered after 2001. |
| Gasoline-powered vehicle, less than 10 years old | Exhaust emissions are tested by performing OBD testing. |
| Diesel-powered vehicle, registered 1980 – August 31, 2016 | Exhaust emissions are tested using smoke opacity testing for diesel-powered vehicles registered between January 1, 1980 and August 31, 2016. |
| Diesel-powered vehicle, registered September 1, 2016 – | Exhaust emissions are tested by performing OBD testing instead of smoke opacity testing. |
| No emissions testing | Emissions testing is not mandatory for gasoline-powered vehicles registered before 1978 or diesel-powered vehicles registered before 1980. Exhaust emissions testing is also not performed for vehicles equipped with a two-stroke engine or vehicles using motor petroleum as fuel. |
